During the September- October of the year the most significant festival of the Nepalis is celebrated. The auspicious festival “DASHAIN” (DASH –in Nepali means 10) lasts for ten days. Each day has their one significance and ends with the worship of one of the nine goddesses.
One the 1st of the 10 days of the propitious festival, puja is marked in homes by planting and nurturing barley seeds in sand and water from the holy rivers. The day is called “GHATASTHAPANA”in Nepali. Goddess “BRAHMAINI” is adorned on the day. The following days are marked by the puja of next eight of the nine marvelous and spectacular goddesses namely the MAHESWORI, the BAGHWATI , the KUMARI ,the BARAHI ,the INDRYANI ,the TRIPURASUNDARI ,the MAHAKALI and the MAHA LAXMI and again the BRAHMAINI on the 10th day or so-called the DASHAMI. Mind that the puja of these goddesses is marked out by the devout bathe on the holy rivers or ponds whatever is possible. on PHULPATI , the 7th day ,sacred flowers and leaves from the Gorkha palace are received by the crowds accompanied by the brass bands at the Hanuman Dhoka gate and the firing of the guns in the Tundikhel .the eight is called MAHASTHAMI when the devout fast and sacrifice of animals including buffaloes, sheeps, and goats on KALRATRI(the black night) .this is followed on the 9th day with elaborate mass sacrifices at the magnificent TALEJU MANDIR in the kathmandu DURBAR square (open to the Hindus on the single day alone) and the sprinkling of the holy blessed by the temple’s eponymous goddess on all the vehicles and instruments in the hope of preventing accidents. It should be noted that the holy sacrifice of the animals occur on the all three TALEJU temples of the
The transportation facilities are at their busiest stage just before the festival as many people return to their homes. All the government offices and other institutions are closed during the festival especially from the day of PHULPATI to the DASHAMI. MANGAL DHUN is the theme music of the festival which you can listen below on the video given.
Many claims that the festival promotes assassinations of animals .but what I say is that this is what gives the festival its real meaning or taste as people enjoy variety of meat items during the festival. So I recommend to those who hate assassinations not to eat meat items and be purely like a cow, eating grasses.
